One of the first things I tell people relocating to Western North Carolina is: don't start with the house—start with the lifestyle you want.
Hendersonville, Mills River, Flat Rock, Laurel Park, Fletcher and the communities surrounding them may look close together on a map, but they can offer very different day-to-day experiences.
Do you want to walk downtown for dinner? More land and privacy? Mountain views? Easier access to Asheville or the airport? An established neighborhood? Woods and wildlife? Less maintenance?
The right house in the wrong location is still the wrong house.
That's why I think understanding the lay of the land should come before randomly clicking through listings.
Let's start there.

Check out If you're considering a move to Hendersonville or the surrounding Western North Carolina mountains, start by understanding how the area fits together.
In Part 1, I begin breaking down the lay of the land so you can get your bearings before deciding where to focus your home search.
Because finding the right home starts with finding the right place to live.
Now that we've started getting our bearings, let's look a little closer at how the different areas around Hendersonville fit together.
Part 2 continues the lay-of-the-land conversation to help you think beyond the house itself and consider how location, access and surroundings can shape your everyday life here.
The goal isn't just to find a place in Western North Carolina—it's to find the part of Western North Carolina that fits YOU.
In Part 3 of my Understanding the Lay of the Land series, we finish our overview of the Hendersonville and Henderson County area to help people relocating here better understand how our communities and locations fit together.
Choosing where to live in Western North Carolina isn't simply about finding a house you love. Location affects the life you're going to live once you get here.
